Jon Sorenson
Managing PartnerJon Sorenson joined Competitive Energy Services (CES) in April, 2003 as a partner. As managing partner at Competitive Energy Services, Mr. Sorenson leads a team in procuring and managing more energy load than any third-party entity in New England and Atlantic Canada, over a billion dollars in energy spend. His experience includes retail and wholesale electricity and natural gas marketing, oil and bio-fuel procurement and hedging, fuel arbitrage, risk management, forecasting, conversion analysis, strategy development, and regulatory work in the US and Canada.
Prior to CES, Jon was retained by WPS Energy Services, Inc. (WPS) to provide retail marketing/business development, regulatory and strategic services. WPS, now Integrys Energy was a $ 5.0 billion energy services company, formerly a subsidiary of WPSR, with has over $14.0 billion in assets. In this role, he started, developed and managed the natural gas operation in New Brunswick, Canada, the first licensed marketer, which became the largest retail and wholesale marketer providing natural gas in the Province. In addition, Mr. Sorenson assisted WPS in their Maine operation in power and natural gas marketing, wholesale origination and modeling, and focused on strategic issues both at the regional and corporate level. Previously, Mr. Sorenson was an original executive officer (CMO) for SmartEnergy, Inc., a mass-market energy services company providing electricity and natural gas service to customers in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, where the Company secured over 120,000 mass-market customers, before being sold to its largest shareholder Alliant Energy.
Prior to his energy background, Mr. Sorenson built an extensive background in telecommunications. Mr. Sorenson held the positions of Division President with Shared Technologies Cellular, Inc., and Chief Operating Officer at PTC Cellular, Inc., a subsidiary of Peoples Telephone Company, both public companies. As an officer and/or partner of multiple companies, he has been part of teams that have secured over $100 million in venture capital, participated in two public offerings, developed the business plans and growth models to exceed expectations and/or implemented turn-around strategies. Mr. Sorenson is currently active on the energy committee and serves as Co-chair of the program for the Annual Energy Conference of the New England Canadian Business Council, as well as serving as a Board of Director for the Council. Mr. Sorenson has served on the Board of Directors for the New Brunswick Natural Gas Association, the Board of Directors for E-Energy, an emerging technology and transactional-based energy technology company in the natural gas industry, and is a member of the Maritimes and Northeast Tolls and Tariff Work Group (M&NP – TTWG).
Mr Sorenson is a graduate of the University of Maine with a degree in economics and finance and serves on the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association (UMAA), on the Board of Advisors for the Engineering School and is Chairman of the Board for the School of Business, Public Policy, Management and Health. Sorenson was recently recognized by former University of Maine President and now current President of Connecticut Board of Regents, Robert A Kennedy, receiving the distinguished Stillwater Society Presidential Service Award for his contributions to the University in both Alumni Relations and Energy Management.
