Market Summary for the Week of August 18 - 22, 2014

by Meghan Nee and Michelle Tham, Analysts

Synopsis of Last Week's Energy Markets

WTI saw a fifth consecutive week of losses and Brent fell for the second straight week. Domestic demand for refined products has been weak this summer, while geopolitical risks in Iraq and Ukraine eased last week, allowing Brent prices to retreat. Natural gas prices saw a weekly gain last week on forecasts for above-average temperatures for most of the US through the end of August, despite falling two out of five days on speculation that temperatures would not be as hot as initially predicted. This warmer-than-normal weather is expected to stoke cooling demand from power plants.
